NAME: Hikaru Hitachiin
CANON: Ouran High School Host Club
CANON POINT: After the last episode of the anime.
AGE: 16
BACKGROUND: Background for character and anime background
PERSONALITY: Hikaru Hitachiin is not well-known for being Hikaru Hitachiin. He’s one half of the Hitachiin twins. There is Hikaru and Kaoru but most times, he is looked at and known as “Hikaru and Kaoru” rather than just Hikaru. People may just confuse him for his brother anyway. Not many people can tell them apart. Most people see them as mischievous, loving pranks, and a bit too blunt when it comes to a situation. Together, they create havoc. They will do whatever they want for fun and who cares what anybody else wants? In the host club they participate in, they’re the ‘Little Devil’ type. If they’re bored, they will do anything to combat that boredom with little care to whatever somebody else may want or what might inconvenience them.
But this is them together and for a long time, the problem was that people only ever saw them as the twins. Growing up without much parental guidance due to their parents constantly being away, they were left to each other which fueled a very unhealthy codependency. Their father’s sister tried to be there for them but they terrorized her. The house staff constantly quit because of them. Hikaru and Kaoru, to each other, could see how they were different but nobody else could see that. It was because of this they grew dependent on each other and shunned everybody else out of their world. For Hikaru and Kaoru, it was us vs. them. Part of themselves wanting to be told apart but also not wanting it at all. They never gave people the chance to tell them apart, never allowing anybody to become close to them. It was not until Tamaki clung to trying to become their friend almost obsessively that they decided to give other people a chance. Although Hikaru is better at getting along with others, he still struggles with this. Most of his life, he saw other people as outsiders, and this is a viewpoint he still must work on. This does not allow him to be very empathetic. It doesn’t help either that he and his brother are spoiled rich boys who just get their way no matter what.
So who is Hikaru Hitachiin, separate from his twin? Hikaru is still mischievous and loves pranks. That’s something both him and his brother get from their mother. Haruhi describes him as “10% more evil” in his actions than Kaoru. Hikaru is very irritable, short-tempered, jealous, and emotionally immature. Hikaru feels things very strongly and tends to just lash out whatever feeling he has if Kaoru cannot reign him in. For Hikaru, he doesn’t really understand his own emotions or why he feels the things he feels and depends on Kaoru to sort that out for him. It’s Kaoru that realizes long before Hikaru that Hikaru has started to fall for Haruhi and Hikaru is confused by his jealousy when he sees Haruhi with an old friend but he acts upon it anyway and lashes out. Hikaru will insist that he’s honest and just doesn’t bother to hide his emotions. If he’s angry then you know he’s angry. Hikaru isn’t the type to mince words and will more likely blurt the first thing that comes into his mind. If you said something he didn’t like then he’ll let you know. If you upset him then you will definitely know. But delicate is not a word Hikaru knows.
Since Hikaru does feel things so strongly, he’s someone that cares a lot. In the end, he’s loyal. For those that have made it inside of his very small world, he’s insanely dedicated to them. While it makes him possessive, he does still want what’s best for the other person. When he thinks Tamaki will leave them in the anime, he ends up pushing the carriage too far and hurts himself, sobbing that he can’t let Tamaki go. When Haruhi was endangered by some thugs, him and Kaoru beat them up. In the manga, Hikaru is horrified when he realizes Kaoru likes Haruhi and Hikaru just never realized. He worries he was selfish and immediately blames himself for Kaoru’s unhappiness. When Hikaru does realize his feelings for Haruhi and has his twin’s blessing, Hikaru is still scared because he knows Tamaki likes Haruhi and to Hikaru, Tamaki is somebody he “owes a lot to” and does not want to hurt him. In the end, he’s willing to put his feelings for Haruhi aside just so she can confess to Tamaki and make him happy.
All in all, Hikaru’s a jerk who doesn’t exactly mean to be a jerk. He cares but learning to care about more than one person isn’t easy. Learning to socialize with somebody that isn’t his brother isn’t easy. But in the end, he isn’t a bad person.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Absolutely none. Hikaru is your normal teenage boy who’s just the son of a famous fashion designer and so he’s skilled in that area. Oh but he can photoshop stuff pretty well.
